In 1980, Perry Weir, owned a retail truck cap and accessory business, and began pursuing an idea for a more durable, better fitting pickup tailgate guard than then existed in the aftermarket. After purchasing an OEM roof rack from a local Chevrolet dealer and installing it on his Chevy Blazer, he also started thinking about developing an OEM style, universal roof rack that would be installer friendly and competitively priced.

In 1982 Mr. Weir finalized his ideas for the tailgate guard and the roof rack, and started a second company, Perrycraft, Inc., to produce the Contempo roof rack series and Gate-Mate tailgate guards, the first extruded aluminum tailgate guard introduced to the aftermarket.

From those two initial products Perrycraft, Inc. has expanded its product offerings to include four additional styles of roof racks and roof rails, five styles of bed rails, and a line of stainless steel Grab Handles.

In 2001 Mont Blanc Industri Ltd. in Sweden named Perrycraft, Inc. as the exclusive U.S. distributor for their Gripper line of add-on load bars and various sports equipment carriers and rack accessories, which has enabled Perrycraft’s customers to service a broader segment of the roof rack and sports equipment carrier market.
