It's got wings

Inside the Business

This 2007 Chrysler 300 SRT-8 came to Red*Star Auto & Truck Works in Sacramento, Calif., looking for some major yet subdued customizing. The owner had a vision and brought it right to Steven Gonzalez, president of the company, to make it happen. Clean, mean and classy was the objective.

Red*Star’s team started out by shaving all the SRT emblems from the interior and exterior to achieve “sleeper” status: When you hit the throttle it is obvious that it is an SRT-8.

Here’s what Gonzalez says he and his team did:

“We dropped the car on the Mopar coilover suspension kit for a more aggressive stance and handling. How about 22 x 9.5 front and 22 x 10.5 rear Avarus AV-1 chrome wheels wrapped in Nitto 420s (265/35-22 front and 295/35-22 rear)? They definitely fill the wheel wells and give a clean and classy look. We added Xenon side skirts to further bring the ride to the ground.

“The exterior was still to receive the “Bentley” style grille from E&G Classics, lambo-style doors from JTautostyle and a super-cool suicide-door setup from Electriclife. We relocated the factory handles to the opposite side door and shaved the original handle mounts. This “kit” required extensive cutting, welding, measuring and fabrication but now looks and operates like factory.

“After installing the suicides, shaving emblems and rolling the inner wheel wells for clearance, we repainted both sides of the vehicle.

The interior got a high-contrast piano-black and -white treatment. We replaced the factory suede seat inserts with white vinyl. The headliner and door panels received the same white upholstery. We dyed the remaining light-gray plastic panels to match the white and eliminated everything that was not black. Finally we replaced the factory interior lighting with blue-tinted led bulbs to give the interior a unique glow.

“We supplemented the already nice sounding factory stereo/navigation with Pioneer 400W amp and two- and three-way 6 x 9s all the way around. This customer was interested in the ‘boom.’

“This 300 gets attention as soon as it drives up. Then we pop the lambo doors up and get the ooohs and aaahs. Next, we stun them with the grand finale when the suicide rear doors open up.

“This ride is definitely an eye catcher and show stopper with the SRT-8 Hemi guts to pull away from most on the road.

Clean, mean and classy indeed is what we achieved.”
