Custom Truck Accessories is a family-owned and operated accessory store in Reno, Nev., that’s been in business since 1983. Beginning with building and selling aluminum camper shells, the company grew and expanded into offering more accessories. Today the truck specialist has five locations; its flagship store in Reno does everything from Leer camper shells and spray-in bedliners to stereos, suspension, wheels, tires and custom paint.
In 2007, Toyota released its first full-size pickup, the half-ton Tundra. Custom Truck purchased one to see how it might accessorize it.
“As an aftermarket parts store, we were very familiar with the types of accessories that were available for all the domestic trucks. However, we wanted to see if it was possible to actually make a ‘tough-looking’ import,” says Chris Martindale.
“We purchased an onyx black 2008 Tundra double-cab short bed and began planning our vision”: First came a Truxxx front and rear leveling kit along with a set of Rolling Big Power 20" wheels and Nitto Terra Grappler tires.
Next the company installed a Leer 700 series tonneau designed to compliment the styling of the Tundra. Later, the team would add a BedRug under the tonneau. “The truck looked beautiful; however, we decided that we wanted much more,” says Martindale. “Instead of playing it safe, we decided to completely overhaul the truck inside and out.”
So came the lift: “We removed the leveling kit and installed a Pro Comp 6" Stage 2 Lift Kit, along with MX6 shock and rear traction bars. We also changed out the wheel and tire package to 20" KMC XD Series Rockstar wheels and 35" Mickey Thompson MTZ tires,” he adds.
But Custom Truck Accessories didn’t stop there. Front and rear Fab Fours bumpers and a Warn M12000 winch were added to complete the offroad look and function. Bushwacker pocket-style fender flares went on. Black Anzo tail lights and Halo headlights were added. With the added lift — and, thus, height — the company installed AMP Research Power Steps. “The final piece to complete the exterior look was a RBP RX Series grille.”
The interior was not to be forgotten. The team put in a Katzkin leather interior complete with a rear headrest DVD package and heated seats. Add to that a Pioneer DVD/Navigation unit.
“The final piece of the puzzle was to add just a small amount of custom airbrushing. A beautiful bright blue paint was airbrushed in a misty, swirling design on the hood, front fenders and front doors,” Martindale says.
“The best part was having it displayed at our lot, and being able to show customers the wide range of accessories we could install on their vehicles. With this one truck we were able to display nearly every aspect of our customization business, and by seeing it on a truck in person customers can be assured that we have the experience and knowledge to work on their vehicle.”
